Artificial Grass – Is It For You?

California’s climate coupled with its typical water absence means many areas of the state tend to run on the dry side. This arid environment makes a case for artificial grass. And for some, artificial turf’s ease of use makes it a very tempting alternative to the real thing. Here are some pros and cons to consider if this is an aesthetic you’re leaning towards.

Cons:

It’s Not Real. At the end of the day, artificial grass is just that. Artificial. If you truly love the smell, look and feel of soft grass, then this may not be an ideal option for you.

It Gets Hot. Research should be done on color, material choice and location if you’re installing it in an area prone to lots of sunlight because the synthetic materials can heat up quite a bit to an uncomfortable level. You’ll especially want to consider this if you have little kids running barefoot in the garden.

It Could Be Unhealthy. Read and research both sides of this argument to determine how you feel about the risk versus rewards of artificial grass. Your personal needs and the location of where you plan to install it may impact whether this is the route you want to take.

Pros:

It Saves Water and Money. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), irrigation water accounts for close to 60% of a home’s total usage, so installing artificial grass will make an impact on not just the environment, but also your monthly water bill.

Longevity. Some distributors state artificial turf can last up to 20 years. This longevity is partly because of the materials used to manufacture it along with the lack of damage from animals, insects and critters looking for a place to live and eat.

Simple care. Free up space in the garage, because you won’t need a lawn mower! Since artificial grass is more like the carpet in your house, you can treat it somewhat similarly. You can keep it tidy by using a blower on leaves, sweeping it, hosing it down to remove spilled substances and even vacuuming it!

Whatever your choice and as with all substantial purchases, give it some careful thought and research. Regardless of your decision, you’re sure to have a beautiful and welcoming front and back yard.
