Christmas Tree Safety in Your New Home
If you celebrate Christmas, no doubt your Christmas tree is one of the biggest focal points this time of the year. If you opt for a real tree, it’s important to adhere to general safety rules to avoid any accidents or damage to your house. Here is a list of items to consider.
- Select a fresh tree and keep your tree well hydrated at all times. If you get your tree early in the season, this is especially true as the weeks go on. By New Year’s Eve, your tree can become very dry.
- Avoid placing your tree near heating vents, fireplaces or windows. Such placement can speed up the drying process.
- Check your lights every year looking for loose connections or burnt-out bulbs. If you’re unsure whether your lights are safe, purchase a new string and discard the old ones. And don’t forget to unplug them when you go to bed or leave the house.
- Place breakable ornaments deep on the branches to avoid breakage. Broken ornaments can shatter and can result in sharp pieces on the floor.
- If you have toddlers, place non-breakable or no ornaments along the bottom portion of your tree. You don’t want little inquisitive hands reaching in and grabbing something that could easily break.
- If you love to light scented candles throughout your home during the holidays, keep them far away from your tree.
