Across the country, extravagant community Fourth of July celebrations and parades are being shuttered because of social distancing rules. But this doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate this special day in history with our own sparkly, red, white and blue event! These five, family friendly ideas will have you feeling as cheerful as ever, without the crowds.
Make a Bang While fireworks and sparklers are banned for personal use in many California communities, you can still make lots of noise (and mess!) with fun confetti and streamer party poppers. Kids love the “explosion” and excitement of these pretend firecrackers.
Make a Splash If you have the space, construct a little waterpark in your yard using old-fashioned garden sprinklers, hose extensions, water balloons, kid-sized pools, etc. Since it will likely be hot, these activities will cool everyone down too.
Pack a Picnic Grab your favorite blanket, pack some delicious food – preferably red, white and blue – and head for a nearby park or day-use camping area. Find an area that’s a bit isolated from others and enjoy this traditional and memory-building moment with your family.
Get Active If everyone in the family has a bike, go for a family bike ride. If you have little ones, let them decorate their bikes, so they feel like they’re in a parade. If biking is not an option, research some moderate trails and paths suitable for every member of the family and go for a hike.
Get crafty Set up some cute DIY stations throughout the house and the yard for you and your kids to create fun summertime crafts. Ideas include making a birdhouse or windchimes, finger painting, creating a potted herb or succulent garden, etc. And for cleanup, you can just hose everything and everyone down!
This is the year of being creative and thinking outside of the box for these milestone and celebratory events. You may enjoy some of these alternative celebrations so much, they may become new traditions for you and your family!
