Good Neighbor Day, which falls on September 28 every year, is a wonderful time to stop and appreciate the community and people around you. Originated by President Jimmy Carter in 1978, his hope was to encourage communities and neighbors to celebrate each other with acts of kindness. Try to incorporate some of the following into this special day – and every day!
Go shopping. If you have elderly neighbors or some with young, busy families, offer to pick up groceries for them.
“Bin” there done that. If September 28 falls on garbage day, take out or bring in (or both!) your neighbor’s trash and recycling receptacles.
Lighten up the litter. Take a walk around your neighborhood with a trash bag (don’t forget to wear gloves!) and pick up litter around your community.
Plan an event. Who doesn’t love a party! From an elaborate gathering with giant inflatables to a smaller intimate potluck, encourage your neighbors to go outside and socialize for a few hours.
Walk the dog. If your kids are old enough, encourage them to offer complimentary dog walking for the day for people who live near you.
Make a donation. As a community, decide on a local charity and then have a neighborhood tag sale and donate the proceeds to an organization that can use a little extra financial help.
