Moving day hacks to make your big day a lot easier!

You’ve signed the papers. You’ve secured your mortgage. And now the day is coming – you’re moving into your new house! But there’s so much to do…scheduling, organizing, purging, sorting and, eventually, packing. Here are some simple ways to keep from becoming completely overwhelmed before and on moving day.

Arrange for childcare and/or pet care. With so much going on and doors open and closed all day, if you have little escapees, you might be best sending them somewhere for the day, so you don’t have to be constantly worrying if your kids and pets are underfoot or missing.

Make decisions early on. Will you be tackling the move yourself or will you be hiring a moving/packing company? If you’re doing your own move, be sure to arrange a truck early and any storage needs you might need along the way. If your move is far, then make all your travel arrangements as soon as possible including flights, a car and a place to stay in the interim.

Rise and shine. Start the big day as early as possible, so you can give yourself ample time during the day to get everything done. This is especially true during the winter months when daylight is at a premium.

Charge it. Make sure all your devices are charged and that you leave leads, USBs and plugs available throughout the day for an extra boost. Even better are on-the-go chargers in case you can’t get to power quickly.

Pack a go bag. Stock up on items you may need for the day at the old and the new location like paper towels, toilet paper, cash, basic toiletries, simple cleaners, prescriptions, markers, pens, packing tape, a utility knife for opening boxes, a sweater, first aid kit, some basic tools and anything else you can think of that you might need in a pinch. If you have children and pets, you may want to add a few comfort items like a favorite toy or blanket.

Bag it. Keep a few sandwich bags on hand along with some self-stick labels. You’re more than likely going to have little bitty parts and screws handed to you that need to be retrieved on the other side of the move. You will be so happy when someone asks for the bolts for the beds and you simply produce a baggie with all the parts needed.

Pack some snacks. You’ll need an energy boost throughout the day so keep some drinks, water, high protein snacks and maybe even some comfort food easily accessible. Since you may not have power or a refrigerator immediately upon entry into your new home, you might want to consider a cool box.

Moving into a new home is a lot of work, but the rewards are aplenty! Once you recover from the stress of the day, you’ll look back at all the build up as a distant memory.
