Choose the right kite. Selecting an appropriate kite that takes into account the weather conditions and your level of knowledge is crucial. You may be tempted to go for the least expensive option if you’re a beginner, but to truly get the most out of the activity, do some research prior to purchasing. Since San Diego experiences a variety of wind patterns, having a versatile kite that can handle different wind speeds is essential. You can consider single-line kites for beginners, and once you’re ready, a dual or quad-line kite for more control and aerobatics.
Be a wind whisperer. SoCal has diverse landscapes, from coastal regions to inland valleys, and as such, each has its own unique wind characteristics. Coastal areas typically have a more consistent breeze while inland regions may experience gustier winds. On kite flying day check the weather forecast, so you can choose your flying location accordingly.
Learn various techniques. Kite flying may look simple, but there are tricks to learn to get the most out of this thrilling high-flying activity! Do some googling and YouTubing to understand and master certain methods that can enhance your experience and minimize frustration. Pay close attention to launching and landing your kite, controlling its altitude and when you’re comfortable, performing basic maneuvers.
Have fun! Remember the reason to fly a kite is to relax and enjoy and spend time with your family and friends. For a beginner flyer, you can expect some initial frustration, but once you get your colorful kite airborne, the experience will let you disconnect and enjoy the sounds, colors and rhythm of flight.
