Save for a New Home

Six Ways to Save for a New Home

If one of your new year’s resolutions is to purchase a new home in 2021 then we may be able to help! We’ve come up with a list of six logical and fairly simple ways to save for this very important and special purchase. With determination, discipline and hard work, we’ll be handing you over the keys to your new Cornerstone Communities home sooner than later!

Meal Prep. It’s so easy to just pop in the car and grab some takeout for dinner and/or lunch, but this can strain any budget. Instead, dedicate one night a week to prepping your meals for the upcoming days. Prepare a menu, purchase the necessary food items, clear a space in the kitchen and start chopping, cooking and storing for the days to come.

Audit your Subscriptions and Memberships. This does not just include subscriptions to printed products, but all those little ones you may have forgotten about that are deducted or charged monthly. This can be anything as small as cloud storage to gym memberships. If you’re on the fence, perhaps you can pause some memberships and see how you do without them. The money saved can go straight into your new house fund.

Buy Second Hand. This is not only a good idea for your pocketbook, but also a great idea for the environment. There are many upscale clothing, furniture and children’s stores and websites where you can get wonderful and often nearly new items for a fraction of what they cost new. You may even want to consider selling some of your own items!

Live Healthily. Another savings strategy that has added benefits is to focus on your health and wellness by exercising, eating right and making healthy lifestyle choices. Avoiding unexpected trips to your health care provider can save you lots over the course a year.

Downgrade. Many of the services you pay for have options to downgrade to a lower monthly payment. If you really don’t watch all your cable channels, select a few to remove. Check your phone and internet bills as well to see if there are options for fewer bells and whistles that you’re not regularly using.

Shop around your insurance. There is no rule that says you must go with the same house and car insurance every year or six months. When it’s time to renew, take a few hours to call around to see if you’re truly getting the best rates. And if you can get a better rate elsewhere, switch!
